Can I have more information about getting my school involved? 19 December 2023 02:26 Updated A bit about Mullets; in 2020 and 2021, our first two years of the campaign, Mullets For Mental Health was very much a student lead initiative, and in 2024 we again are encouraging schools to take part. In terms of what other schools have done in the past; both Inverall High School and St Josephs College, both in NSW, have raised funds through Mullets For Mental Health. Both schools have very sadly been directly affected by suicide, and have found solace in the message of the campaign. St Inverall ran a BBQ, gold coin donation activities. Casual dress opportunities and a hairdresser/barber for students and staff who registered as Mullets for Mental Health participants (with parent permission). St Josephs undertook a raffle, and approached local radio to do interviews, as well as engaged with a well known swimwear brand to design and receive donations from their own design of swimwear. In 2020, one teacher promoted the campaign in a PDHPE class after looking for novel ways to enable a mental health discussion. He subsequently chopped off his long hair into a mullet and found that the school engaged simply by him regularly checking and promoting his fundraising goal, which also importantly gave him an excuse to talk about mental health. Donations and interest came from students, teachers and community members giving the school community a chance to have an important, accessible and relevant discussion through the prism of the mullet. If you’re interested in doing the campaign, you could start by creating a team page for your students (and teachers) taking part. Some of the ways to attract interest could be to: • Nominate a teacher or Principal • Nominate a year mullet rep. Encourage a student from each year to get behind the cause. • Use as a learning and leadership activity. Challenging students to come up with innovative virtual mullet event ideas. e.g. Design and create Mullets Merchandise and sell and donate their page • This year we also can create smaller year group teams within a larger school group team. Maybe a friendly fundraising competition between year groups could also work • Promote in any email comms to parents and community members For more information about involving schools, feel free to visit this web page: https://www.mulletsformentalhealth.org.au/schools
